With a character like Colonel Sanders at the helm, it’s not surprising that KFC has grown to become one of the world’s most loved food brands. In 1939, he perfected his Original Recipe® Chicken and by 1964 people all across the United States and Canada were enjoying his unique chicken recipe.

Then just seven years later, KFC arrived on the New Zealand shores with a store in Auckland.

Fast-forward 40 years and much has changed, however one thing has stood the test of time – the Colonel’s Original Recipe® Chicken. In fact, thanks to the popularity of his 11 secret herbs and spices, KFC now has 97 stores nationwide.

Our signature recipes

Such is the success of our 11 secret herbs and spices that even to this day only a handful of people know the recipe. In the early days, the Colonel kept the recipe in his head. Today, the secret recipe is kept under lock and key at our headquarters in Kentucky.
